The Suess is loose!

I hope you all know that Thursday, March 2nd is Dr. Seuss's birthday.  To celebrate this day, I want everyone to tell their favorite Dr. Seuss story, and what important life lessons you learned from it.  My personal favorite is The Sneetches.  We can learn that everyone is the same no matter how they look.  Stars or no stars, we should agree that we are all Sneetches!  This lesson was taught by Dr. Seuss decades ago, but it is even more relevant today than it was back then.  I wish a monkey would come and help people today all appear the same so we can realize that we all are the same.  What is your favorite Dr. Seuss lesson?

  1. I am going to pass this one off to my son Marley and he says his favorite Dr. Seuss is The Grinch who stole Christmas. He says he loves that the story teaches that having money, decorations, and presents do not mean you will be happy. He says having family and friends that love you is what living is all about. He says I am doing O.K. at this "single-dad" thing.

    1. Hearing about children understanding and learning these lessons makes my heart grow three sizes. Reading to our children and getting them involved in learning is so important. You are doing this, so I bet you are doing O.K. at the "single-dad" thing!

  2. I have to jump in with the Lorax! Teaching children about taking care of their environment and standing up against people who don't is a very valuable lesson. As we watch nervously about the fate of the EPA, our youth may be our only hope to save our planet!

  3. Before my wife and I had children, I never really read many Dr. Seuss books. Now that I have a son in kindergarten, it seems that we read one of Dr. Seuss' books each week. At the moment, our favorite is "Green Eggs and Ham." My son is proud to read it because it is a "J" level book on the A-Z reader list. The persistence of Sam-I-Am is wonderful and yet annoying. In the end, the unnamed character tries the green eggs and ham, showing kids that you should consider giving something a try and not be closed to it because its different.

  4. Honestly, didn't read Dr.Seuss stories that much as a young child. But, I do remember Cat in the Hat which has multiple lessons included. Some being, not letting strangers into your house, not to do dangerous activities in the house or period, being responsible for the mess you make, and that you shouldn't lie even if you did something wrong.

  5. I loved when we would celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday in school! I felt honored as a kid to share his birthday month! My favorite Dr. Seuss book was Green Eggs and Ham. It taught me to never judge a book by its cover, and it is okay to try something different than the norm.

  6. My favorite book was also Green Eggs and Ham. My Dad used to read this story to us when we were little and then cook eggs and ham for us. The act got me really into reading and of course I thought my Dad was hilarious. I memorized the book and would read it to my siblings. I agree with Felicia, it taught me to try something new and not to judge.

  7. I have so many favorites from Dr. Suess. However, I love the "A,B,C" book! My mom use to have this entire book memorized and she would quote it to me all of the time as a child. It was so fun and helped me to learn. It is one of my favorite memories.

    1. I actually read that last night to my daughter! It isn't her favorite, but Itchy Icabod and a lion licking a lollipop are great to check out any day. (ten turtles in a tree isn't half bad either.)
